DISY proposes property seizure in graft cases

Ruling DISY has submitted a bill that will enable the state to seize the property of anyone found guilty of graft, its chief Averof Neophytou said on Thursday.

“The punishment of those who took money that did not belong to them, cannot be limited to imprisonment,” Neophytou said. “It is not fair for someone who steals millions to do a few years in jail and enjoy the loot after they are released.”

DISY has submitted a proposal that will amend the law, authorising the state to confiscate the property of anyone found guilty of corruption, bribery or embezzlement.

“As (political) parties we need to define the legal framework and the rules of good administration in a way that will prevent mismanagement but also correct the effects of criminal misconduct,” Neophytou said.

The party has also proposed expanding the criminal code to cover offenses committed overseas, which involve individuals residing in Cyprus or Cypriot trusts.
