Average wages down 1.6 per cent in first quarter

AVERAGE gross employee earnings were down by 1.6 per cent in the second quarter of 2013 compared with the first three months of 2012, said the Statistical Service on Monday.

According to preliminary data, the average gross salary in the 2nd quarter of 2013 was €1,881 per month, representing the mean between the considerable gap between the salaries of men and women. The data reveals that the average pay for men in the second quarter of this year was €2,061 per month, compared to €1,679 for women.

The Statistical Service notes that extraordinary pay cuts which were implemented from the fourth quarter of 2011 and the fourth quarter of 2012 in the public sector do not have an impact on employees’ gross salary but rather their available income and are not reflected in the above data.
