Pensioner seriously injured in gas explosion

A 76-YEAR-OLD woman from Ineia in Paphos was seriously injured just before 8am on Monday in a gas explosion as she went to light a stove.

The small kitchen, measuring three metres by two metres was almost completely destroyed. A hole was created in the ceiling and damage was caused to the walls and the rest of the house.

Neighbours rushed to the scene as soon as they heard the explosion. They immediately called the emergency services and helped extinguish the fire which was caused by the explosion.

The woman was taken by ambulance to the emergency department of Paphos general hospital where doctors established she had suffered first and second degree burns to 60 per cent of her body.

She is currently being held in the surgical ward of the hospital.

Her condition is serious but her life is not in danger according to doctors.

The woman has lived alone since her husband passed away a year ago.

Police are continuing their investigations to establish the exact cause of the explosion although they believe it was most likely caused by a leak from the stove.
