Shaka Zulu was a famous Zulu king that was widely credited with uniting many of the South African tribes into the Zulu Kingdom. Like Shaka Zulu the man, Shaka Zulu the pub brings together a diverse crowd. A steady flow of drinks, decent pub food, friendly proprietors, a regular crowd, enthusiastic sporting occasions, musical blasts from the past and reasonable prices keeps everyone happy.
Owner, Mike from South Africa, still pulls the pints behind the old, beer stained wooden bar. The pub is a comfortable and airy and is decorated with vintage furniture and ornaments, reminiscent of Africa and the good old days, before everything became white and trendy. TV screens are in abundance, each one offering a different sporting experience, even including the Super Bowl at the request of enthusiasts, who sat up all night watching it.
The bar offers a complete selection of beverages including a decent range of beers, spirits, cocktails and wines as well as non alcoholic options for the younger ones. Wines are categorised into ‘cheap’, ‘better’ and ‘event better’, which is perfect for those of us who just want a glass of wine without all the fuss of selecting it. Shaka Zulu also offers a decent selection of cocktails, which even included all time Cyprus classics such as Brandy Sour and Ouzo Special. The menu offers a decent food selection that includes home made burgers and sandwiches, hot dogs, fresh salads, fajita’s, tortillas and jacket potatoes.
After a few sips of my Ouzo Special, I slipped lower into my bamboo chair and relaxed to the extent that I felt I was on holiday, surrounded by a cheerful crowd who were humming away to Queen, David Bowie, Elton John and Mick Jagger playing in the background. Shaka Zulu is a great place to unwind, meet up with mates to watch a game or take the family for a social, take-it-easy night out. The staff are warm and friendly and the chances are you’ll become friends in no time. Mike also organises a couple of themed parties a year including drinking and singing boat parties! The next one is on October 6, so get in touch for details, it sounds like a blast! For those animal lovers among us, the pub is even sponsoring a charitable event to raise food for the local dog shelter in Limassol, so why not pop by and get involved.
Beers range between €2 and €4, wine €3-4.50 and cocktails are priced reasonably around €5.
