Grenades and pill haul linked to planned football violence

POLICE IN Nicosia found two plastic yogurt containers in a field near the Anthoupolis roundabout on Tuesday evening which contained two grenades each and 950 pills believed to be ecstasy.

Reports in daily Politis claimed that the grenades – which were inactive and so would not have exploded – were going to be used in some way during an upcoming football match. The pills, apparently, were payment for the grenades.

“Investigations are ongoing and we are taking some statements but nothing concrete has been established,” police spokesman Andreas Angelides said.

The four grenades will be destroyed, police said.

Officers were tipped off about the whereabouts of the containers.

“We will continue searching to see whether further investigations are needed,” Angelides added.
