Hospital probe into how gauze was left in woman’s abdomen

The health ministry and the police are looking into how hospital gauze was left inside a woman’s abdomen after she had a C-section to deliver twins at Larnaca General Hospital.

The 28-year-old went into Larnaca general hospital after hemorrhaging on July 22 and doctors performed a C-section on her. She was seven months pregnant at the time.

She left the hospital a few days later but was back ten days after the operation with stomach pains.

“After leaving the hospital she had very strong pains in her stomach so on July 31 she went back to emergency services. An X-ray showed that she had gauze in her abdomen,”  the family’s lawyer Aristotelis Misos said.

“She was again operated on to remove the gauze, and her appendix, which had become infected. The procedure took four hours.”

According to Misos the woman is still in hospital but is out of danger.

The woman’s husband reported the incident to police on Thursday and also hired a lawyer. Both police and the ministry of health will investigate.

“We received a complaint from the 28-year-old’s husband yesterday (Thursday) about gauze being left inside his wife after she underwent a C-section operation to deliver twins,” police spokesman Andreas Angelides, said.

“Written statements have been received and we have started a criminal investigation to establish negligence.”

The parents of the twins also have another child.
