Conscript dies after motorcycle accident

An 18-year-old soldier critically injured in a motorcycle crash in Paphos the previous evening died on Saturday.

Charalambos Demosthenous had suffered severe head and other injuries when he crashed his motorcycle at 10pm on the Ayia Marinouda to Yeroskipou road.

A second conscript, also 18, who was riding pillion sustained lighter injuries and was being treated at the Paphos general hospital on Saturday.
Neither rider was wearing a crash helmet.

Demosthenous apparently lost control of the motorcycle on a turn, went off road where he hit a 1.5-metre embankment.

He suffered injuries to the head and thorax and was rushed to Paphos hospital where it was deemed necessary to transfer him to Nicosia general due to the severity of his condition.

Demosthenous died at around 11.30am.

The two youths were on their first leave after joining the National Guard earlier this month.

They had been undergoing their basic training in Paphos.
