National Guard Chief has contract renewed

THE CABINET yesterday renewed the contract of National Guard chief, lieutenant-general Stylianos Nasis, by another year.

Government spokesman Christos Stylianides said later the government views Nasis’ track record so far as “absolutely satisfactory.”

Nasis’s continued presence at the helm at this time is “more than necessary,” the spokesman added.

Nasis, a Greek national, was appointed under the previous administration in July 2011, replacing Petros Tsalikidis who resigned days after a deadly munitions blast at Mari naval base.

The lieutenant-general stayed on to implement key government projects, such as a pilot programme for a reduction in the length of service for conscripts. He is also currently preparing a strategic military planning study for the government.
