Fire destroys snail farm

A FIRE completely destroyed a snail farm in the industrial area of Paliometocho in the Nicosia district on Monday night.

According to police, the fire broke out at the 700 square metre farm owned by a 39-year-old man at around 10.40pm on Monday.

On the farm were 600 bags of organic fertilizer valued at €11,000, 150 rolls of shading net worth more than €12,000, a €30,000 Porsche Cayenne, a

Mercedes van worth €10,000, a €2,000 Peugeot van, a pick-up van worth €16,000 and a large quantity of snails worth about €150,000.

The fire was extinguished by members of the fire service who told neighbours to evacuate the area due to dense smoke.

Police were unable to ascertain the full extent of the damage Tuesday as the fire made it too dangerous to walk into the farm’s warehouse, which is not covered by insurance.

Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire.
