Djokovic dominates after Azarenka controversy

Novak Djokovic installed himself as red-hot favourite for a third straight Australian Open title with a semi-final demolition of David Ferrer on Thursday after Victoria Azarenka had controversially set up a final against Li Na.

Serbian world number one Djokovic was brutally dominant as he pulverised the Spanish fourth seed 6-2 6-2 6-1 in 89 minutes in Rod Laver Arena to race into Sunday’s final against Roger Federer or Andy Murray.

“This was definitely one of the best matches of my career,” he said. “Tonight I just played incredible.”

AEL, Anorthosis progress into national cup quarter-finals

An early goal and 2-0 first leg advantage were not enough for APOEL to secure their spot in the last eight of the national football cup, as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to AEL at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia on Wednesday afternoon.

“Based on how we played we should not have conceded three goals. This season whenever we need to make one step forward, we take two steps back,” APOEL’s coach Ivan Jovanovic said, visibly disappointed with his team’s elimination.

Aldo Adorno opened the proceedings only two minutes into the match, but Patrick Vouho levelled the score 10 minutes later from the penalty spot, after Michael Klukowski brought down Luciano Bebe.

Snow bound

With the first snow of winter last weekend it was time to head to the ski slopes. ALIX NORMAN struggles in vain to get there

I learnt to ski in Cyprus, starting with one of the very patient instructors from the Cyprus Ski Federation. Back then, there would be snow in December, January, February and March. And in one memorable year, there was still enough to ski on at the start of April. Those were the days.

Restaurant review: Boulevard Brasserie, Paphos

My first meal on a school trip to France – a simple plate of salad, grilled steak, haricot verts, French bread and cheese platter – left me wondering how everything could possibly taste so good. I was introduced to these new flavours via lunch at a small bistro, one of those places where they throw Edith Piaf on the stereo, scrawl a menu on a mirror and voila! you have a Parisian bistro.

Bar review: BarV, Limassol

My friends and I were not looking for a new go-to place for our Saturday nights out when we were pointed towards the direction of BarV for a fun New Year’s Eve, but that’s what it turned out to be. You simply cannot call a night at BarV something other than ‘fun’.

BarV is new on the Limassol club scene; it opened its doors to the public on November 30, welcoming guests to a classy, mostly black and white location. Inside, the bar in the middle gets your immediate attention – it’s quite big for a petite place like BarV. You are also surrounded by island bars throughout the club, ideally placed for groups of four to six people and a more exclusive BarV experience.

Cyprus to counter ‘dirty money’ claims

CYPRUS is going on the counter-attack over money laundering allegations with political parties embarking on a campaign abroad to convince people that such claims were unfounded.

The decision, taken by parliament yesterday, is for party representatives to seek meetings with parties they are affiliated with in other countries.

Parliament will also look into organising a mission to countries, like Germany, where most of the allegations have come from. The task will be to explain the situation and the measures, which are in place in place to prevent money laundering.

Our View: Dealing in theories and ignoring the facts

THERE could not be an election campaign without a pointless debate about the form the solution of the Cyprus problem should take. During the 2008 election campaign the three main candidates all agreed that the settlement should be a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation (BBF), but the Tassos Papadopoulos camp insisted that it needed to have ‘the right content’, while Demetris Christofias insisted that it should feature a strong central government. Ioannis Kasoulides, to his credit, avoided getting into this childish game.
