Where to next for Cyprus talks?

THE Cyprus negotiations were left up in the air yesterday after the two leaders met for what could very well be their last time given the lack of progress to date, and the obstacles arising in the coming months.

Although aides to the two leaders were still meeting on property, no new meeting was fixed between President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu before UN Special Adviser Alexander Downer goes to New York mid-April to meet with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Eroglu said after yesterday’s meeting that as far as the Turkish Cypriot side was concerned, they had made it clear the meeting was at least the last one until Ban decides whether or not to call an international conference.

Cyprus ready for any net attack by Anonymous

INFORMATION Technology (IT) authorities here are on alert to minimise any disruption to the Internet ahead of tomorrow’s threatened global attack by hackers collective Anonymous.

In a released statement, the Telecommunications Regulator said a meeting was held Monday between government IT departments and private Internet Service Providers (ISPs), “the purpose of which was to coordinate actions for a joint and organised response, if necessary and wherever any action is required”.

“All the competent officials are ready on a 24-hour basis to inform the public should the need arise,” the statement said.

Tainted baby food seized

AUTHORITIES yesterday confirmed that they had impounded a shipment of baby powder from Russia after tests revealed a batch was contaminated with a strain of bacteria potentially deadly to infants.

Head of the public health services Christos Christou said authorities acted swiftly and blocked the bulk of the shipment before it reached the market.

As part of routine screening, on March 2 samples were taken of a baby-food product imported from Russia and manufactured in Israel. Out of the five samples sent to the state lab, three returned positive, indicating the presence of the bacteria known as sakazakii.

CERA suggests sovereign wealth fund for gas revenues

NOBLE Energy plans to drill two more wells in Block 12 to identify the spot where natural gas extraction can be conducted.

John Tomich, Noble Energy operations director in Cyprus, said the new drillings would reveal a full three-dimensional assessment of the block.

“One of the goals is the commercial exploitation of the deposits and there are plans for a pipeline that will possibly lead to Vassilikos”, he said.

Tomich was speaking on the sidelines of the Economist Summit in Athens “Greece, Cyprus, Israel: Re-designing the European energy map”.

Meanwhile it was reported yesterday that energy regulator CERA has handed to the President a 47-page report recommending the establishment of a state-run hydrocarbons corporation.

US teen found guilty in murder of Cypriot tourist

A JURY in the US state of Florida found a teenager guilty on Wednesday of gunning down two British tourists – one of Cypriot descent — in the coastal town of Sarasota after they stumbled into a high-crime area in April 2011.

Jurors deliberated for about two hours before declaring Shawn Tyson, 17, guilty of two first-degree murder charges in the deaths of James Kouzaris, 24, and James Cooper, 25. The two visitors were out drinking in Sarasota when they got lost.

They were found shirtless, with their trousers down, and shot to death in a housing project known for high crime, Assistant State Attorney Ed Brodsky said.

Cabinet approves new central prison project

The Cabinet has approved a proposal by the Justice Ministry to build a new central prison to address overcrowding, 16 months after Justice Minister Loucas Louca informed legislators where the new facility would be built.

Cyprus’ prisons are among the most overcrowded in the EU and currently hold over 700 people, double the amount for which they were designed.

The Justice Ministry said that 700 prisoners was the absolute limit “and when exceeding it we apply a policy of freeing prisoners who have lighter sentences or those who would be released within a short time”.

Even if capacity in the current facilities was expanded, it would only reach 577 for the closed prison and 714 in total by 2014, not enough to cover current and future needs adequately.
