Pervert doctor jailed for 26 years

A LARNACA gynaecologist who has pleaded guilty to raping and sexually abusing his patients was today sentenced to 26 years in prison.

Late strikes sink APOEL hopes

Substitute Kaka sparkled and Karim Benzema scored twice as Real Madrid finally broke down underdogs APOEL in Nicosia last night, winning the Champions League quarter final first leg 3-0.

The Brazil international was introduced in the 63rd minute and set up Benzema for a 74th-minute opener before tucking away fellow sub Marcelo’s excellent cutback eight minutes later.

France striker Benzema’s second gave the scoreline an emphatic look despite a mighty defensive effort by APOEL, whose giant-killing run has accounted for Lyon, Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk but who were outclassed last night.

Stolen frescoes unveiled at their new home

BYZANTINE frescoes, dating back to the 13th Century, which had been stolen from the north after 1974, were unveiled yesterday at the Archbishop Makarios III museum in Nicosia.

The frescoes are likely to be officially inaugurated in July when Cyprus assumes the EU presidency, Archbishop Chrysostomos told a news conference yesterday.

The frescoes, stolen from the church of Saint Euphemianos in Lysi arrived home a fortnight ago. They had initially been cut into 38 pieces by thieves intending to sell them on the black market. They were stolen by Turkish art dealer Aydin Dikmen who shipped them to Germany.

Varosha opening: a bluff or a Plan B?

REPORTS OF Turkey opening the fenced off part of Famagusta town to Greek Cypriot residents under Turkish Cypriot rule has left many scratching their heads as to what lies behind the press report.

Some analysts consider it an “opening salvo” by the Turkish side ahead of UN Special Adviser Alexander Downer’s report on the status of the peace talks to pressure the Greek Cypriots. Others say there is a clear legal agenda behind the move, while some see it simply as a bluff.

President Demetris Christofias yesterday made it clear that the preconditions for the return of Varosha (the fenced off area of Famagusta) to its legal inhabitants are explicit and defined by the UN.

More sought in fuel scam

FIVE people have so far been remanded on suspicion of conning consumers by placing a special mechanism on petrol pumps.

The owners of the four stations named by Commerce Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis on Monday – two Lukoil stations in Nicosia and Larnaca, as well as two Total Plus stations in Nicosia and Paphos – along with the assistant manager of one of the stations are all in remand, while two other men are wanted in connection with the case.

Paphos District Court yesterday issued a six-day remand for a 60-year-old man from Strovolos, who owns a number of stations across the island, including the one in Paphos where the special mechanism was found.

Cypriots drink less than their EU peers

CYPRUS has among the lowest consumption of alcohol per capita in the EU but when it comes to those who do like a tipple, binge drinking is quite prevalent.

According to a report released yesterday on alcohol in the EU, compiled by the World Health Organsiation (WHO), Cypriot alcohol consumption stands at 9.3 litres per capita compared to the EU average of 12.4. Malta came in at the lowest with 8.1 litres per capita, Greece with 10.5 and the UK with 12.5.

When it came to so-called binge drinking – six units of alcohol on a single occasion at least once a month – 48 per cent of Cypriot men and 11.9 per cent of Cypriot women were classed in this category.

Cypriots still producing more rubbish than everyone else

CYPRUS has again topped the list in Europe as generators of the most household waste with 760kg per person on average.

In the EU27, 502 kg of municipal waste was generated per person in 2010, while 486 kg of municipal waste was treated per person. This municipal waste was treated in different ways3: 38 per cent was landfilled, 22 per cent incinerated, 25 per cent recycled and 15 per cent composted.

Kouris on the brink of overflow

THE ISLAND’S largest dam, Kouris, is expected to overflow for the second time in its history, possibly by next week, according to officials at the Water Development Department.

“More than likely it will overflow after the weekend, we’ll see,  if it rains. Of course it could overflow sooner but we don’t need to rush it,” said senior technician at the Water Development Department, Fedros Roussis.

According to Roussis, the last time it overflowed was in 2004 and is currently 99 per cent full.

The dam, whose construction was finished in 1988 in the Limassol area, has a storage capacity of 115 million cubic metres.

Downer ‘more positive’ about the talks

UN SPECIAL Adviser Alexander Downer has returned from his weekend trip to Brussels “more positive” about the status of the peace talks after meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

Speaking outside the presidential palace yesterday, Downer said he briefed President Demetris Christofias on his meetings in Brussels, where he met with the foreign ministers of Britain, Greece and Turkey, as well as EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule.

The Australian diplomat said he focused his briefing to the president on his discussions with Davutoglu, which he described as important.
