I often wonder how our politicians arrive at their decisions regarding our relationship with other nations. Are these diplomatic decisions to enhance our relationships and worldwide standings oOr are they simply poor decisions made on the spur of the moment; like fads, or the “in thing” to do?
I ask these questions, as I cannot understand our recent desire to “get into bed” with Israel. Was this the correct decision? Do we want to appease the US, or Britain for some unknown reason? The Americans are a nation that never really showed any interest in resolving the Cyprus situation and that appears to whole heartily support the Israelis in their efforts to destroy the Palestinians with their “if you dare to retaliate at our occupation of your lands, we will destroy you with all our advance technological weaponry”.
Will we be drawn into a conflict with the Arab countries? Or, do we want to be the target of the lunatic terrorists that roam the world and spread terror? Since when has Israel shown any interest in our problems? Forgive me for saying. But, if I’m not mistaken…the only interest that Israel has had in Cyprus to date, has been to invest heavily in the Turkish north of the island.in transactions involving Greek-Cypriot owned properties and building developments. Not to forget the huge amounts of cash they deposit in the hotels and casinos in the north. Cyprus is just a stop point to disembark from the aeroplanes and cross over; with no income coming from either tourism or investments. So how can the government reach this decision?
Maybe it’s the petroleum or the gas reserves? Do we want Israel to be put into the position of controlling our lives and inheritance and that of our future generations. I have no personal problem with Israel, apart from their reluctance to find a real solution to the Palestinian problem, which is within their means..
Maybe, we are a nation that appears to clutch at whatever arm is held out…..we just seem to make the wrong choices and suffer accordingly. When I say suffer, I mean the people; as I am certain the politicians never have that problem. Our politicians make the choices without thought for their people. Yet, it’s we who suffer the consequences. I hope I’m wrong.
