Church raising funds for Greece

THE CHURCH of Cyprus is raising money today and tomorrow to help families in Greece “who are suffering because of the financial crisis,” Reverent Ieronymos, chief assistant to the Archbishop, said yesterday at a news conference.

“We will set up stands in various spots in Nicosia, Larnaca and Aradippou in collaboration with Logos radio station selling coupons,” reverent Ieronymos said.

The Archbishopric has started sending food and clothes to Greece after the Archbishop of Athens Ieronymos II visited the Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos II in December.

“He informed us of the situation,” reverent Ieronymos said.

Since then, the Archbishopric has been sending some 2.5 tonnes of meat a month to various Greek cities, reverent Ieronymos said. Lamb will also be sent for Easter.

In addition to Greeks, there are also Cypriots both at home and in Greece needing the Archbishopric’s help, Ieronymos said.

Reverent Ieronymos said the Bishops would be meeting on March 7 “to see how many poor and needy families there are in Cyprus so we can start helping them regularly.”
