Licence might be revoked after fatal crash

A 53-YEAR-OLD man was remanded for two days by Limassol District Court yesterday after a traffic accident in Limassol on Sunday, in which a 48-year-old motorcyclist, Michalis Charalambous was fatally injured.

Michalis Katsounotos, head of Limassol traffic police said that he plans to send a letter today to the police chief requesting that the driver’s licence be revoked as he is “a danger to public safety”.

The driver only had a learner’s driving licence and smelt strongly of alcohol at the time of the accident. He was arrested and detained after refusing to take a breathalyser test.

According to Katsounotos, although he refused to be breathalysed the police will try and prove that his responses were diminished during the time of the accident as he smelt strongly of alcohol. He was also staggering and stuttering, said Katsounotos.

“The driver displayed blatant negligence and is being monitored by a psychiatrist,” he added.

Charalambous was taken to Limassol General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
