Norway mass killer decries ‘cultural destruction’

Anders Behring Breivik, who killed 77 people in Norway, said on Monday his massacre was necessary to prevent his country’s cultural destruction.

“We in the Norwegian movement will not sit and see that we are made a minority in our own country,” the anti-Islam fanatic told a packed courtroom in only his second public comments since the attack in July.

“The attacks on the government headquarters were preventive attacks on people committing cultural destruction of Norwegian culture and Norwegian ethnicity,” he said and demanded to be released immediately.

Greece lets another deadline slip in bailout poker

Greece let yet another deadline slip on Monday for responding to painful terms for a new EU/IMF bailout as patience in Brussels wore thin over drawn-out negotiations among its feuding political leaders.

Failure to strike a deal to secure the 130 billion euro rescue risks pushing Athens into a chaotic debt default which could threaten its future in the euro zone.

Panos Beglitis, spokesman of the PASOK socialist party, said on Sunday that leaders of the three parties backing technocrat Prime Minister Lucas Papademos’ government had to give their responses in principle by noon (1000 GMT).

However, a government official denied that the parties had been given an ultimatum to respond on Monday.

Turkey summons Swiss envoy over genocide denial remarks

Turkey summoned the Swiss ambassador on Monday to complain about a decision by Swiss officials to launch checks to see whether Turkey’s EU affairs minister had breached the law by denying Ottoman Turks had committed genocide against Armenians nearly 100 years ago, a Turkish Foreign Ministry official said.

“This is not acceptable. The envoy has been summoned for an explanation,” the official told Reuters.

According to media reports, Turkey’s EU Affairs Minister Egemen Bagis said late last month at the World Economic Forum in Davos and also at a concert in Zurich that the killing of Armenians by Ottoman Turks was not genocide.

Swiss anti-racism laws make it illegal to deny a genocide.

Giants' defence comes up big in Super Bowl win

Eli Manning may have been voted most valuable player of the Super Bowl but it was a relentless New York Giants defense that earned much of the credit for a heart-stopping 21-17 win over the New England Patriots in the NFL championship game on Sunday.

Facing one of the National Football League’s all-time quarterbacking greats in Tom Brady, New York’s defense held strong in denying him a fourth Super Bowl title and a place in the gridiron record books.

“Our defense has played so well,” praised Giants coach Tom Coughlin. “Coming from the (New York) Jets game on, it’s given everybody confidence.”

Baghdatis captures first career doubles title

MARCOS Baghdatis and Mikhail Youzhny won the Zagreb Indoors doubles title after beating local wild card entrants Ivan Dodig and Mate Pavic 6-2 6-2 in Sunday evening’s final.

The Cypriot-Russian duo, playing together for the first time last week, broke serve twice in each set and dropped just eight points on their own serve throughout as they raced to victory in 51 minutes.

“It has been a pleasure to come back here to play this week,” said Baghdatis. “I was last here in 2007 and it has been great to be back. Thanks to everyone for making it a great week and thanks to Mikhail for playing with me. Also, congratulations to him on a great tournament,” he added.

CYAir flights to London’s Heathrow resume

Flights to London’s Heathrow Airport, disrupted Sunday due to heavy snow, resumed this morning.

Cyprus Airways Spokesman Kyriakos Kyriakou told CNA the two flights that were cancelled on Sunday will fly out on Monday.

Already, passengers who were scheduled to fly on yesterday’s CY 326 flight that was cancelled left around 10am local time on another flight.

Passengers of yesterday’s flight CY 327 from Heathrow were rebooked to return to Larnaca on a different flight today in early afternoon.

Heathrow Airport authorities announced that after a meeting this morning it was agreed that based on current weather forecasts, there is no need to reduce Heathrow’s flight schedule and its usual flight schedule will operate.

Canadian Muslims issue fatwa against 'honour killing'

A GROUP of Canada’s leading Muslim clerics has issued a fatwa against so-called “honor killings,” just a week after three members of an Afghan Canadian family were convicted of a gruesome quadruple murder that triggered a national debate about cultural values.

A weekend statement from the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada said 34 imams and leaders affiliated with the group issued the religious edict to remind Muslims that honour killings, domestic violence and misogyny are major sins and crimes punishable by law.

“The recent Shafia family trial in Kingston, Ontario has reminded all of us that we need to do more in order to prevent such tragedies in the future,” the statement said.
