Prime murder suspect detained for a further eight days

THE PRIME suspect being held in connection with the brutal murders of his pregnant girlfriend and her three-year-old daughter was detained for a further eight days by Paphos district court yesterday.

The court heard that the charges under investigation now also include the attempted abortion of Julia Oborok’s and his unborn child.

Police now believe they have forensic evidence linking the 29-year-old suspect to the murder of the 24-year-old Moldovan woman, the unborn child and her three-year-old daughter Victoria Pozidou, which took place in Paphos last week.

“The police have received evidence and sworn statements in support of the case against the suspect, in particular in relation to items identified in police investigations in recent days,” said police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos.

“In particular, we are still looking for the missing murder weapon,” said Katsounotos.

He added that at both the murder scene and with “other parties associated with the suspect”, evidence and documents were uncovered which substantiate evidence already gathered.

In addition, he said that telecommunication data of the suspect were also being analysed by investigators, the results of which are pending. “They will add to the overall investigation,” he said.

According to Cyprus News Agency, deputy head of Paphos CID Michalis Ioannou said yesterday that forensic tests on the blood stains found on the socks of the suspect came back revealing that the blood samples belong to the victim.

Tests on the foetus of the pregnant woman concluded that the suspect was the father.

Oborok was found shot dead in a rental car on December 12. Her three-year-old daughter, Victoria Pozidou, was found around 50m from the car.

The suspect denies taking part in the murders but it has emerged that he had physically abused Oborok in March.

Ongoing police investigations also revealed that the suspect was addicted to internet gambling, which drove him to bankruptcy and indebted him to private lenders.

The mother and aunt of the main suspect were remanded in police custody for a further two days on Tuesday on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a crime, collaboration after a felony, destruction of evidence and perverting the course of justice.

The 16-year-old Greek Pontian girl employed at the suspect’s hairdressing salon who was arrested along with the two last week has been released and is expected to be called to court as a prosecution witness.

The suspect’s 56-year-old mother and 54-year-old aunt deny the charges.
