Arsenal's stunning UEFA turnaround "surprised" Wenger

The irony of Arsenal becoming the first English team to reach the Champions League round of 16 was not lost on manager Arsene Wenger after his team beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday to seal top spot in Group F.

The 62-year-old Frenchman, who declared his “love and commitment” to the club before the game, gave a sheepish grin as he admitted “surprise” at Arsenal’s stunning turnaround in form following their disastrous start to the season.

Police issue how-to video on using new highway

17:15 AFTER a stern warning earlier this month on how to use the new three-lane highway stretch, and a grace period before clamping down on offenders, police say they will extend the period for another 15 days.

In the meantime they have released a how-to video for drivers.

The 40-second clip is been aired on television stations, and demonstrates to drivers how to use the three lanes correctly. Police urge drivers to watch it carefully and follow it to the letter.

They said the new checks on motorists will begin on December 12.

When the new lanes were opened two weeks ago Traffic Department head Demetris Demetriou said that drivers who did not use the three-lane highway properly would be fined.

Burglar abuses "dumb" victim in apology letter

A convicted burglar forced to write a letter of apology delivered a barely literate diatribe in which he blamed his “dumb” victim for the crime because the kitchen window was open.

The letter from the unnamed crook, which was not delivered to the victim, was released by West Yorkshire police in Leeds to demonstrate the mindset of the criminals who target people’s homes.

The 16-year-old burglar was told to write a letter of apology as part of an Intensive Supervision and Surveillance Programme (ISSP), a non-custodial plan for young offenders.

Instead of apologising for his offence, the teen thief wrote: “I don’t no (sic) why I am writing a letter to you! I have been forced to write this letter by ISSP.

Historic qualification marred by violence

10:46 FOOTBALL fans smashed cars, attacked a rival team’s clubhouse and torched rubbish bins in Nicosia on Wednesday evening as they celebrated APOEL’s historical qualification in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Police said they arrested four youths aged between 17 and 25 in connection with the trouble.

The four were part of some 3,000 APOEL fans that filled the capital’s streets at around 9 pm, after their team’s away game against Zenit in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

The final score was 0-0.

During the celebrations, unknown individuals attacked the clubhouse of archrivals Omonia — smashing windows — and cars parked nearby

Green light for second licensing round

THE CABINET yesterday decided to launch the second licensing round for offshore oil and gas exploration, authorising the trade and industry minister to prepare the ground for the official announcement.

At the same time, Turkey’s state energy company TPAO signed an accord with Shell yesterday for hydrocarbon exploration and production in the Mediterranean and southeastern Turkey and said other major international firms were interested in exploring nearby.

Turkey is opposed to Cyprus and Israel drilling. Its Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said yesterday that Cypriot and Israeli energy exploration was illegal and that any discoveries in the east Mediterranean basin should be equally shared.

Our View: AKEL proposals a bid for political capital, not a true rescue package

TRUST the AKEL leadership to use the precarious situation of the economy as a pretext to promote its anachronistic socialist ideology. On Tuesday AKEL leader Andros Kyprianou presented the party’s proposals for the economy which read much more like a communist election manifesto that could be implemented over the next five to 10 years, rather than as a package for shoring up the economy now. Like the president who was its leader, the party does not have any sense of urgency.
