Over a year ago, when Kathryn Bigelow became the first female to receive an Oscar for best director for The Hurt Locker, many hailed the win as a milestone for women in Hollywood. This year, however, the best director nominees were once again all men. 

Critics say that the lack of films helmed by women means that too often society is deprived of different points of view. This unfortunate lack of female voices becomes especially felt in cinematic representations of women, where the main role of women in movies are often no more than a love interest for the leading actor or as a weak and frail “damsel in distress”. 

Rehn: Cyprus must step up austerity measures

14:37 THE EU’s economic affairs commissioner Olli Rehn has once again called on Cyprus and other member states to step up its austerity measures in order to regain market confidence.

In a speech in Berlin today, Rehn said: “The fundamental reason for the turbulence in the sovereign-debt market is that there is no trust in the market…  Some member states (need to) do the necessary fiscal and structural reforms to service their debt”

Referring to the countries that received letters from Rehn last week, calling for increased austerity measures, he said: “Those countries that have come under pressure need to step up their efforts to regain market confidence, and they have committed to do so.”

APOEL, considered competition minnows and rank outsiders to qualify from a group that includes teams who have all won the Europa League in the last four seasons, have been the talk of Europe so far this campaign, unbeaten in four games and top of Group G. 

The Nicosia side is now within touching distance of joining the likes of Barcelona in securing their place in the draw for the knockout stages of Europe’s premier club competition.

Elena Skordelli admitted to Nicosia General Hospital

14:20 ELENA Skordelli has been admitted to hospital with ‘Serious health’ problems today, according to the Sigma live website.

Ahead of the commencement of the hearing before the Criminal Court for the brutal murder of Andis Hadjicostis, Skordelli’s lawyer said she was suffering from a serious health condition that had worsened over the weekend.

The lawyer insisted her condition was not frivolous but required immediate medical care. 

The Assize Court judge, with the assent of the prosecutor approved the lawyer’s request for Skordelli to be allowed treatment and she was taken to Nicosia General Hospital.

President views ‘impressive’ rig progress

THE GOVERNMENT is pressing ahead with the search for hydrocarbons in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone and will soon launch the next round of offshore licensing, President Demetris Christofias said yesterday.

Christofias made the comments during a tour of Noble Energy’s ‘Homer Ferrington’ drilling rig, located some 160km off the island’s southern coast.

It was the president’s first trip to the rig since US concession partners Noble started an exploratory drill in September.

Christofias was accompanied by Commerce Minister Praxoulla Antoniadou, Agriculture Minister Sofoclis Aletraris, Government Spokesman Stefanos Stefanou and Under-Secretary to the President Titos Christofides.

“It is going well,” Christofias said of Noble’s drilling operations.

Our view: Now is not the time for a state medical school

AFTER A meeting last week attended by the ministers of health and education and the rector of the University of Cyprus, it was announced that a medical school would be opened in 2013. After the meeting health minister Stavros Malas said the academic staff would be hired next year and would work at the Nicosia General Hospital which would become Cyprus’ first university hospital.
