Five days of film

FIVE DAYS of great films are about to bring the Cine Studio in Nicosia to life as the University of Nicosia once again hosts its annual ‘Soapbox Media’ event. Kicking off this coming Monday and running through until Friday, there are a couple of very interesting screenings to choose from.

The event will kick off with the now well known Sharing an Island, a documentary by local filmmaker Danai Stylainou that sees six young Greek and Turkish Cypriots sharing a house for a week while taking various journeys around the island. As the camera follows them through their various experiences, viewers are given a glimpse of a young standpoint on the Cyprus problem and the ongoing division of the country, with plenty of fresh perspectives up for debate. The event will be followed by an open discussion.

Tuesday night will then see the screening of a documentary all about dealing with Alzheimer’s disease named Mum. Is dementia a far greater problem for society than for those who have it? Can different forms of media be used as awareness tools? The short documentary has been made by Dutch theatre practitioner Adelheid Roosen concerning her mother. The filmmaker will be present at the event to engage in discussion along with a panel of experts including Antigoni Diakou, president of the Pan Cyprian Alzheimer’s Association.

Another highlight then comes on Thursday night with a screening of the best of the ‘Cannes Lions’; the prestigious international advertising awards that see bronze, silver and gold awards given to the cream of the crop. The screening will be coupled with short introductions by Marios Stylianou, director of MSViewpoint and Christiana Paschalidou, director of the Cyprus Advertising Regulation Association.
