Sarkozy tells Obama Netanyahu is a 'liar'

FRENCH President Nicolas Sarkozy branded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “a liar” in a private conversation with US President Barack Obama that was accidentally broadcast to journalists during last week’s G20 summit in Cannes.

“I cannot bear Netanyahu, he’s a liar,” Sarkozy told Obama, unaware that the microphones in their meeting room had been switched on, enabling reporters in a separate location to listen in to a simultaneous translation.

“You’re fed up with him, but I have to deal with him even more often than you,” Obama replied, according to the French interpreter.

The technical gaffe is likely to cause great embarrassment to all three leaders as they look to work together to intensify international pressure on Iran over its nuclear ambitions

Expats invited to share their experiences

A research organisation is calling on expats around the globe to share their experiences of living abroad.

The Expatriate Archive Centre, which now houses a fascinating collection of life stories from across the globe, aims to preserve and make accessible the memories of expatriates of all nationalities and employment backgrounds.

The Centre conserves materials which could otherwise be lost, damaged or discarded, to establish a valuable facility for researchers worldwide, and since its inception in 2002, has grown and diversified to include a wide range of writings, diaries, letters, memoirs, photographs, videos, blogs, DVDs and oral history recordings about the lives of people living and working overseas.

Boxer Frazier, Ali's greatest foe, dies

JOE Frazier, the relentless slugger who became the heavyweight champion of the world and earned boxing immortality with three epic battles against Muhammad Ali, died this morning at the age of 67, his personal manager said.

‘Smokin Joe’, who was the first boxer to beat Ali, died in Philadelphia a month after being diagnosed with liver cancer. Leslie Wolff, Frazier’s personal manager, confirmed his death.

Frazier won the Olympic heavyweight boxing gold medal for the United States in 1964 in Tokyo and held the world heavyweight boxing crown from 1970 to 1973.

He is eternally linked with Ali thanks to their trilogy of fights in the 1970s, among the most famous in the history of the sport. Frazier won the first and Ali took the next two.

Nicosia planning on Capital of Culture win

Nicosia municipality has launched its 2017 European capital of culture bid under the slogan “Planning for the future”

According to the bid’s artistic director Achilleas Kentonis, Nicosia’s proposal takes into account the “universality of culture” and is based on six pillars; architecture, arts and cultural heritage, economy, science, environment and civil society.

“We view culture from a different approach,” Kentonis told the Cyprus News Agency: “(It is) the medium that shapes our thoughts in relation to the others, the nature and the society, so culture is a pretty expanded notion”.

Moody's downgrades BoC, Marfin and Hellenic banks

Moody’s Investors Service has today downgraded the long-term deposit and debt ratings of the island’s three main banks over the reduced ability of the government to support the large banking system if necessary.

Moody’s cut Bank of Cyprus’ ratings by one notch to Ba2 from Ba1, Hellenic Bank by one notch to Ba2 from Ba1, and Marfin Popular Bank by three notches to B2 from Ba2.

Moody’s has also placed the ratings of the three banks on review for further downgrade. These actions follow Moody’s downgrade on November 4 of the Cypriot government bond rating by two notches to Baa3 (on review for possible further downgrade) from Baa1.
