Greek PM not resigning, awaits talks with opposition

GREEK Prime Minister George Papandreou has no plans to resign while he awaits the outcome of talks with the opposition, a minister who took part in a cabinet meeting said.

Security stepped up for Peres visit

POLICE have taken what they called ‘draconian” security measures in preparation for the official visit of Israeli President Shimon Peres who arrived in Cyprus last night.

Police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos said the force had mounted an operation spearheaded by the special anti-terrorist squad MMAD.

The squad will be working with other branches, including the presidential guard and Israeli security officials who will accompany Peres on his visit.

A police helicopter will be monitoring the Israeli president’s movements and intervene if necessary, the police spokesman said.

Our View: Ban’s change in talks format, January deadline all rational steps

LOCAL reaction to the three-party meeting in New York and the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s subsequent statement, setting a deadline for the talks, was the expected one. All the opposition parties felt that inadequate progress had been made, expressed deep concerns about the idealised picture of the talks presented by Ban and were angered by his view that the end of the negotiations was approaching.

Fears mount over dwindling Turkish Cypriot population

TURKISH Cypriot opposition parties continued efforts in the north’s ‘parliament’ yesterday to block proposed changes in the social security and immigration laws which they say will lead to further mass immigration from Turkey and emigration of indigenous Turkish Cypriots.

Efforts to block the bill were yesterday being led by Communal Democracy Party (TDP) leader Mehmet Cakici who sought filibuster the proposed amendments by delivering a record-breaking 13-hour speech that began on Tuesday and ended early yesterday morning.

Yesterday, Cakici’s place had been taken by other deputies who said they too would seek to filibuster the bill.

Talat denied entry to Australia

FORMER Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat has been denied entry into Australia because his Turkish diplomatic passport read “former president of the TRNC,” it was reported yesterday.

According to Turkish Cypriot news portal Kibris Postasi, the Australian embassy in Nicosia refused to grant a visa for him to travel to Sydney and Melbourne where he was scheduled to give lectures.

Kibris Postasi said Talat had travelled to many countries with the same passport when he was the leader of the Turkish Cypriots while Australia had granted him a visa in the past despite it saying “former TRNC president.”

The report said efforts were made by the Turkish foreign ministry to change the decision but to no avail.

‘Sylikiotis rocks, Antoniadou flops’

COMMERCE Minister Praxoulla Antoniadou is the least popular minister while Interior Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis is by far the most popular, according to a poll carried out on behalf of Ant1 TV station.

According to the poll, the government as a whole continued to be unpopular with a 72 per cent disapproval rating. Those viewing the government positively dropped to 14.8 per cent from 23.3 per cent last year.

President Demetris Christofias announced a cabinet reshuffle early August following the resignations of the Defence and Foreign Ministers after the July Mari blast.
