Car smashes through bank window

CUSTOMERS and staff of a busy Bank of Cyprus branch in Paphos, along with passersby, had a lucky escape yesterday after a car smashed though the front of the building.

According to Paphos police spokesman Nicos Tsapis, two people – a customer and a passerby- sustained light injuries and were treated for cuts caused by flying glass.

“Luckily no-one sustained any serious injuries during the incident which was caused by the female driver of a 4X4 car,” he said.

According to Tsapis the 65-year-old British ex pat was attempting to re-park her car outside the bank on Elados Avenue, one of the busiest main roads in Paphos.

“The lady was trying to manoeuvre her car, but somehow hit the gas pedal with force causing it to shoot forward and smash through the front of the bank,” he added.

Witnesses said the entire glass front shattered, shooting shards of glass in all directions.

One eyewitness said: “At first we thought it was a bank robbery as the car was literally inside the bank, but we later found out it was an accident.” Tsapis said the woman was not arrested.
