Inglorious burial for Libyan tyrant

Muammar Gaddafi and his son Mo’tassim were buried in a secret desert location on Tuesday, five days after the desposed Libyan leader was captured, killed and put on grisly public display.

The saga has made Western allies of Libya’s interim leadership queasy about the prospects for the rule of law and stable government in the post-Gaddafi era.

“He (Gaddafi) has just been buried now in the desert along with his son,” National Transitional Council (NTC) commander Abdel Majid Mlegta told Reuters by telephone.

Manchester United star quits Serbia national team

Nemanja Vidic has quit the Serbian national team after their failure to qualify for the Euro 2012 finals in Poland and Ukraine, the Serbian Football Association (FSS) said on Monday.

The FSS published a statement by the Manchester United defender, who said media and fan criticism over his recent performances for Serbia had persuaded him to hang up his international boots.

“The basic reason for my international retirement is that my commitment for the national team has been criticised by the media and therefore by the public as well for some time now,” the FSS website quoted Vidic as saying.

“I’ve been under fire although I turned up to play for Serbia even when I was injured and sometimes I did so against the advice of my club.”

Does Twitter Resonate with Europe?

TWITTER is in the news a lot these days.  It recently raised $800 million on an $8 billion valuation. At Web 2.0 it announced impressive sign up and engagement numbers and new ad models that will satisfy users’ expectations. And of course there is iPhone 4S and IOS5 integration, which launched last week, and places Tweet messaging alongside SMS and email…that’s powerful stuff!

CEO Dick Costolo said it best at Web 2.0 “We have lofty ambitions. We want to be part of the fabric over every communication in the world, and we think we can reach every person on the planet.”  Reaching an entire planet is a lofty goal. Facebook has also expressed the same vision and has amassed 800 million users towards that goal.

Turkish threats taken to EU Council

EUROPEAN heads of state and government have agreed to discuss the Cyprus problem and Turkey’s recent threats against Cyprus in the next December summit, said President Demetris Christofias.

Speaking after a meeting of the European Council in Brussels on Sunday, Christofias said his proposal to discuss Turkey’s “aggressive” behaviour towards Cyprus was accepted by his EU counterparts.

The president raised the issue of Turkey’s aggressiveness during discussions among EU leaders on a tougher policy towards Syria and Iran.

Lack of facilities has dialysis patients being treated at 2am

THE LACK of dialysis facilities, coupled with a growing number of people with kidney disease is so bad that many patients are on the machines sometimes until 2am, the House Human Rights Committee heard yesterday,

Committee chairman Sophocles Fyttis said 95 per cent of dialysis patients could not work as they must spend four hours at a time three days a week on a machine.

“They cannot work and many are too poor to sustain themselves,” he said.  At the same time, the number of people needing dialysis was growing at the rate of 30 per cent a year while facilities had not been expanded at all to accommodate the change.

Car smashes through bank window

CUSTOMERS and staff of a busy Bank of Cyprus branch in Paphos, along with passersby, had a lucky escape yesterday after a car smashed though the front of the building.

According to Paphos police spokesman Nicos Tsapis, two people – a customer and a passerby- sustained light injuries and were treated for cuts caused by flying glass.

“Luckily no-one sustained any serious injuries during the incident which was caused by the female driver of a 4X4 car,” he said.

According to Tsapis the 65-year-old British ex pat was attempting to re-park her car outside the bank on Elados Avenue, one of the busiest main roads in Paphos.
