Murray taken the distance against nemesis Baghdatis

SECOND SEED Andy Murray flirted with disaster before beating nemesis Marcos Baghdatis 7-6 2-6 6-4 in a cliffhanger to reach the last 16 of the Japan Open yesterday.

Briton Murray, fresh from winning his third title of the year in Bangkok, left it late to avoid a fourth defeat in five meetings against the Cypriot on his return to Tokyo.

“In the first two sets he definitely played better than me,” Murray told reporters. “I did a lot of the running and I was lucky to win the first set on a tiebreak.

“They were very different conditions to last week in Thailand and with the roof across it’s also different. It took me longer to find my range.

“He is a tough guy to play against. He has a big serve. He can hurt you in many ways on the court.”

DISY: Christofias on a one-way street

AKEL speaks of political coup

MAIN opposition leader DISY’s Nicos Anastassiades yesterday said President Demetris Christofias had no choice but to step down or call an early election if he wanted confidence restored in his leadership.

“His option is a one-way street,” Anastassiades said. “Either he steps down or seeks renewal of his mandate.”

Ruling AKEL yesterday charged that the DISY leader and other opposition parties were attempting to stage a political coup to make way for Anastassiades to win the presidency.

Christofias has been under serious pressure since Monday when the investigator into the Mari blast Polys Polyviou apportioned him the lion’s share of the blame for the Mari naval base explosion in which 13 people died on July 11.

Our View: Christofias thinks he is above criticism and the law

ALL THE positives that we wrote about the Mari investigation yesterday appear to have been demolished, within a few hours, by President Christofias and his AKEL henchmen. We had said that it was the first time in the history of the Republic that the President and the Council of Ministers had appointed a committee with a brief to investigate them; it was also the first time a president had agreed to appear before an investigative committee and answer questions in a public hearing.

Criminal probe handed over

THE POLICE Chief yesterday handed over a sizeable report on its criminal investigation into the Mari blast to the Attorney-general, reportedly pointing the finger at ten people deemed criminally responsible.

Police Chief Michalis Papageorgiou and his team delivered 36 files and 1,000 pages comprising a two-volume report.

The police took 1,123 depositions, 510 testimonies and collected 464 separate pieces of evidence.

It is understood that police have recommended the prosecution of ten individuals from all public bodies involved in the events leading up to and after the blast that killed 13 people and destroyed the island’s main power station at Vassilikos.

Vengeance may have to wait until president becomes a civilian

PRESIDENT Christofias may sleep soundly at night in the knowledge that no one can force him to resign – but he could face the music once he becomes a civilian, circa 2013.

He has roundly come under fire for refuting the conclusions made by Polys Polyviou in his probe into the Mari blast, which put the responsibility firmly at the feet of the president.

Since they were announced on Monday there have been repeated calls for Christofias’ resignation but he says he has no plans to do so.

Under the Constitution, the President of the Republic is immune from prosecution as well as from civil action during his term of office.
