Seven slots to play for in World Cup pool finale

South Africa, England and Ireland head into the final round of World Cup pool action top of their groups and seemingly set for the quarter-finals but they could all be flying home on Monday if things go against them this weekend.

Partly because of the bonus point rule, 13 more teams still have a chance to make the last eight, with a 14th, New Zealand, the only team already through and guaranteed to finish top of Pool A.

The availability of bonus points for winners and losers, plus teams finishing level being split by their head-to-head records (unless there are three teams, when points difference is used) has led to myriad qualification scenarios.

United and City eye Premier League redemption

Midweek European disappointment for both Manchester clubs could lead to United and City taking out their frustrations on Premier League lesser lights Norwich City and Blackburn Rovers respectively on Saturday.

Norwich, who have eased up into mid-table after back-to-back wins, should be in for a testing time against the league leaders at Old Trafford (1400 GMT) where Alex Ferguson will have made it quite clear that a second successive slip-up will not be tolerated.

United were cruising with a 2-0 lead at home to Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday but in a stunning turnaround, conceded three times before rescuing a draw with a late Ashley Young goal.

'We should frame the group table'

APOEL coach Ivan Jovanovic believes his side can continue their impressive Champions League form as they sit proudly top of Group G following another excellent result away to Shaktar Donetsk on Wednesday.

After collecting their first victory in the Champions League Group Stage in the opening match against Zenit St Petersburg in Nicosia, the Cypriot champions held experienced European campaigners Shakhtar to a battling 1-1 draw on Wednesday night to move a point clear of Porto at the top of the pile.

“We would like to win all our games until the end, but this does not always depend on our own performances. We will put the group standings into a frame because it is probably surprising for everyone,” Jovanovic said.

Barroso: EU facing biggest challenge in its history

EUROPEAN Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso yesterday said the bloc was facing the greatest challenge in the history of the union and he urged the European Central Bank (ECB) to do everything in its power to maintain financial stability in the euro zone,

In his ‘State of the Union’ address before the European parliament, Barroso said: “The financial, economic and social crisis has resulted in a crisis of confidence and trust not seen in decades”, a statement that would suggest the region’s problems are the worst since the European Economic Community came together in 1958.

Our View: Why are wealthy public sector tax evaders never under scrutiny?

A DAY rarely passes by without us hearing of at least one union leader demanding that the state turn its attention to taxing those “who have and hold” wealth.

It is one of those meaningless slogans used ad nauseam in a crude attempt to deflect attention away from the big disparity in wages between the private and public sector.

The fact that it is used by public sector union bosses and the communists is no coincidence. It is all part of the propaganda campaign aimed at covering up the institutionalised discrimination practised by the state in favour of public employees at the expense of all other workers.

Under-fire Downer says his words were lost in translation

LOCAL POLITICIANS rounded up on UN and EU officials yesterday over comments reportedly questioning Cyprus’ sovereign right to explore and exploit its natural resources.

Drawing most of the fire was seasoned diplomat, UN Special Adviser Alexander Downer for comments made on Tuesday regarding a possible mediation role for the UN over the oil and gas dispute should both sides request it.

Also under the spotlight was EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fule who said on Tuesday: “All problems need to be solved through peaceful means, if needed through arbitration from the International Court of Justice and threats of use of force need to be rejected”.
