'Finished' Tevez denies refusing to play

Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez denied on Wednesday he had refused to come on as a substitute in their Champions League match against Bayern Munich and said he is ready to play on for the club.

Manager Roberto Mancini told reporters that the Argentine had ignored his instruction to warm up early in the second half of Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat in Germany and that Tevez was “finished” while he was manager.

Tevez, who has found controversy follow him from club to club, sought to placate City fans whom he has already angered over the past year with his open desire to leave the club.

“There was some confusion on the bench and I believe my position may have been misunderstood,” he said in a statement, according to local media.

AEK target their first Europa League win

Surprise package AEK Larnaca will be aiming to capitalise on Steaua Bucuresti’s poor recent run of form tomorrow night, as they go in search of their first win of the Europa League Group Stage.

AEK have been a breath of fresh air this season, putting on a string of impressive performances that has seen them become the first Cypriot team to gain a Europa League group berth.

The Larnaca side, buoyed by their domestic 2-1 victory against Ethnikos Achnas at the weekend, a result that leaves them third in the table, will be looking to build on their impressive achievements so far this season by beating Steaua in Nicosia tonight.

Turkish vessel moves in and around Cyprus' EEZ

TURKEY HAS sent its ageing seismic research vessel Piri Reis near the Aphrodite field south of Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) where drilling has already begun.

In a clear effort to up the ante in an already tense eastern Mediterranean, Turkish officials yesterday continued to warn Cyprus against drilling in Block 12, where Texas-based Noble Energy began exploratory drilling last week.

“If the Greek Cypriots agree to stop, we’ll stop too. But if they insist on proceeding, they know very well Turkey’s attitude,” Turkey’s minister for European Affairs, Egemen Bagis said yesterday during a visit to the occupied north.

Our View: Since when can an unelected technocrat force decisions?

NOBODY could ever accuse the head of the Ministry of Commerce’s Energy Service Solon Kassinis being afraid to make his views known to the public. On the contrary, he seems unable to turn down an invitation to impart his wisdom on drilling for hydrocarbons and other energy issues. Yesterday morning he was speaking on radio and last night he was scheduled to appear on a current affairs show on CyBC television, presumably to inform viewers how the drilling at Block 12 was going.

Downer calls for restraint in drilling dispute

THE UNITED Nations urged restraint in an escalating dispute over gas exploration around Cyprus yesterday, saying the controversy had not affected peace talks and that it hoped that would remain the case.

Envoy Alexander Downer also said that the United Nations could consider a mediating role provided that the sides asked for its involvement.

He was speaking after a five-hour meeting between President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu as part of the ongoing negotiations.

Man found hanging in police cell on day of release

MYSTERY SURROUNDED the death of a 40-year-old man from Larnaca who was found hanging from his police cell in Limassol yesterday, the same day he was due to be released from custody.

The 40-year-old was arrested at around 1.30am last Saturday along with a 35-year-old man in connection with a burglary at Karmiotissas Church in Polemidia. Acting on a tip-off, Limassol police watched as the two men allegedly broke into the church.

According to a police spokesman, when arrested on the spot by police, the 40-year-old had first tried to escape and then hit the arresting officer.
