Williams scores hat-trick as Wales thrash Namibia

Scott Williams grabbed a hat-trick of tries as Wales thrashed Namibia 81-7 to record their highest rugby World Cup score.

The bonus point victory also gave Wales the edge in their battle with Samoa to secure second place in Pool D, and the Pacific Islanders need to beat world champions South Africa on Friday to have any chance of advancing to the quarter-finals.

The Welsh, who beat Samoa 17-10 last Sunday, took advantage of a tiring Namibia team to run in 12 tries.

Wales flyhalf Stephen Jones became the most-capped player for his country with his 101st appearance and kicked 15 points, with six conversions and a penalty, before being replaced by Rhys Priestland, who slotted three conversions.

Bayern eye group domination with win over City

In-form Bayern Munich host Manchester City in their Champions League Group A game on Tuesday knowing that victory against the team that looks like their direct group rivals will put them in the driving seat.

Bayern go into their second group game in scintillating form, having won their last nine games in all competitions without conceding a single goal. They also won their group opener at Villarreal two weeks ago to lead the standings.

While Bayern have historic associations with the city of Manchester, they are linked to United rather than City.

United’s 1958 air crash in Munich that decimated the team and the 1999 Champions League final where United snatched a last-gasp victory over Bayern are two significant dates in Munich.

Eurozone dampens talk of rapid debt crisis steps

Euro zone officials played down reports today of emerging plans to halve Greece’s debts and recapitalise European banks to cope with the fallout, stressing that no such scheme is yet on the table.

Europe came under fierce pressure from the United States and other major economies at weekend talks in Washington to take swift, decisive action to stop the Greek debt crisis engulfing bigger euro zone states and derailing world economic recovery.

But officials said media reports that planning was already in place for a 50 percent writedown in Greek debt and a vast increase in the euro zone rescue fund, the EFSF, were highly premature.

Scotland need to find their killer instinct

Scotland’s inability to finish off try-scoring movements may come back to haunt them when they face old rivals England in a do-or-die rugby World Cup clash at Eden Park on Saturday.

Scotland were beaten 13-12 by Argentina in their Pool B clash in Wellington on Sunday, leaving their qualification chances on a knife edge.

Heading into the final week of group matches, the Scots know they must beat England by more than seven points, and if possible score four or more tries.

England head Pool B with 14 points while Scotland have 10, the same as the Pumas who face Georgia in Palmerston North on Sunday and short of a major boilover are likely to win that match comfortably with a bonus point.

Freddy fires Omonia to narrow victory over Anorthosis

Angolan striker Freddy scored a first-half injury-time goal to provide Omonia Nicosia with a narrow 1-0 victory over Anorthosis Ammochostos in the fourth round of the national football championship at Larnaca’s Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium over the weekend.

“This is a very bad result for us,” Anorthosis’ manager Stanimir Stoilov assessed.

“I cannot be satisfied with our display as we were very anxious throughout the game. Before the game I said that whoever scores first will probably win and that is exactly what happened. We created several goal scoring opportunities, but unfortunately failed to convert them. This is clearly a psychological problem and something we need to work on,” Stoilov added.
