New blades of glory

ICE skaters in Paphos will now be able to enjoy the sport year round as a new ice-skating rink opens its doors to the public for the first time.

The permanent rink, brainchild of Paphos businessman and architectural engineer Vangelis Mavronicolas, is 150 sq. metres and based in Kato Paphos’ Old Carob store Haroupomylos.

Paphians previously had flocked to a temporary rink set up in the town hall gardens last winter and, until today, many skaters had to travel to the permanent rink at Limassol’s My Mall.

Mavronicolas, 49, said the idea for the rink had come to him only recently, given his daughter’s delight in the activity.

“I took my 13-year-old daughter to the temporary ice rink at Paphos municipality at Christmas time and she and her friends loved it,” he recalled.

“She went four times in two weeks and I saw how enthusiastic all of the children were about the sport, so I thought it would be a good idea to build a facility in Paphos.”

With an area over 1,000 sq. metres, the complex also houses a cafeteria, changing rooms and a rental spot for skates along with the rink.

“It took only about three months to build; I’m an architect, so I’m used to moving quickly,” he said.

The ice rink will be open all year round from Wednesday to Sunday.

Mavronicolas employs six people at the new rink, two of whom are experienced skating teachers, on hand to teach groups and individuals.

Skates of all sizes are available for rent, and a blade-sharpening service is also offered for those wishing to keep their own skates in tip-top shape.

Mavronicolas has yet to try out the new rink himself, but intends to “have a go” in the near future.

There is also a fibreglass dolphin which aids would-be skaters of any age. “You just hold onto it whilst on the ice and it aids with balance,” he said, and helpful ‘bob skates’ are available for children aged two to three years.

The new sports facility has been welcomed by local officials, including Mayor of Paphos Savvas Vergas who said the rink was a great addition to Paphos.

Hours of operation are Wednesday to Friday, 3- 9pm, Saturdays 11am-11pm and Sundays 3-9pm. Skates can be hired for €4, (€2 for bob skates); one hour on the ice will cost you €4.
