‘The Indignant’ call for Christofias’ resignation

DISY leader Nicos Anastassiades yesterday reiterated calls for President Demetris Christofias’ resignation as he received over 10,000 signatures demanding the same thing.

Anastassiades was speaking to a group of people from the citizens’ movement ‘The Indignant’, or ‘I Aganaktismeni’, in its Greek name.

The group met with Anastassiades to hand over a petition with 10,800 signatures collected across all five districts but mainly from outside the presidential palace during nightly demonstrations, calling for Christofias to accept political responsibility for the July 11 blast and to step down.

Anastassiades said he understood the movement’s plight and that they were “justified” in asking for the president’s resignation.

“Every politician is obliged to undertake his responsibilities,” he said.

The DISY leader said the people who made decisions also had the cost of paying for their mistakes and that political responsibility was not attributed through investigations but undertaken by politicians who were politically responsible.

He said a credible investigation was needed to get to the bottom of who was negligently responsible for the “huge destruction” at Mari, however, so far the facts spoke for themselves and it was clear that one person had to take responsibility. Anastassiades made no effort to conceal the fact he was referring to Christofias.

During the brief meeting, a female member of the movement said they would continue to gather signatures petitioning Christofias’ resignation and a complete “cleansing” of the status quo.

“He [Christofias] has lost his reliability and as ‘The Indignant’ we believe he has the main responsibility for the entire tragedy. He has to undertake his political responsibility and as part of his political responsibility he should resign and face justice,” she said.
