Energy alchemist Alicia Smith says through people power anything is possible, a message she hopes to spread through seminars in July. NAOMI LEACH meets her
The uprising in Egypt, conflict in Libya, ongoing violence in Yemen and the Japanese tsunami. Human revolution and natural disaster have characterised 2011 already. With the ancient Mayan doomsday of 2012 fast approaching too, it’s not a huge leap to surmise we are living in apocalyptic times. But change even of an apocalyptic scale doesn’t always have to be a bad thing.
“Apocalypse, to take the original Greek meaning is ‘to lift the veil’ and has been turned to mean something else. When the veil is lifted everything becomes more apparent. We see that separations among people, family and friends aren’t real.
“The way the world is, is part of evolution. Things needs to happen, it’s speeding up and is more obvious but it’s been happening in the invisible world for a long time now. With Egypt, people said it only took 28 days but that’s rubbish, it took a long time in the unseen world. People were praying and praying and finally something shifted and changed. One can see what’s happening in the world from the things that are changed. People are the power. They are honest, truthful and in harmony with each other. This island could do with that,” explains energy alchemist and spiritual teacher Alicia Smith.
From her hilltop home in Latchi overlooking the azure waters of the Mediterranean, the healer, light worker, shaman and reiki master has been putting together a series of workshops, set to run across the island this July to introduce the ‘joy of one us’ and promote unity.
“One us meaning we are all one together,” asserts Alicia in her confident, affable southern English accent.
Although she’s English, Alicia considers herself a citizen of the world. At 21 she escaped to Malaysia brandishing the Lonely Planet South East Asia on a shoestring as her backpacking bible. Since then she has spent the last 30 years travelling extensively, taken “thousands of people on journey’s across the world”, learned shamanism in India and trained with indigenous Hawaiians, Australian aboriginals and Native Americans. In Peru she acquired the nickname Alice in Wonderland, which stuck. Alicia hasn’t had a permanent address for the past five years, instead she thrives on following her heart or inner spiritual guidance, to run courses, teach and heal people wherever necessary around the world.
“If you’d told me I wouldn’t have a home for five years, then I’d say ‘no way’. But it’s basically like listening to guidance. I have woven between the holy lands – Israel, Jordan, Egypt – Europe, California and Hawaii. I’ve just arrived back from working in Washington, it’s a huge power point on our planet, so many decisions are made there.”
Alicia visited Cyprus in her twenties and was drawn back to the island 18 months ago.
“At Aphrodite’s bath, spring water went over my head and I remember being in bliss. I had a heart opening experience, felt a lot of love and a part of me always knew I’d return,” she beams.
The energy alchemist says she feels a duty to be of service to people while the world is out of balance. Her courses emphasise nurturing the feminine aspects of ourselves, to listen more and be more receptive, generous and compassionate. She explains how being more active in the heart than the head brings about peace rather than war.
In her energy work, Alicia manipulates the electromagnetic fields that connect us all. Brushing off scepticism, she says science has proven there is more to the world than we can discern. Knowing that people use only 10 per cent of their brains makes it entirely feasible that some people see more, can heal or are telepathic, she concludes.
“A lot of energy is asleep. Some people just naturally see things. It’s not encouraged by the establishment because it empowers individuals and it’s not so easy to control a nation. Everyone is a healer,” she confides.
The eight workshops, running on weekends this July, are open to everyone. Alicia also wants to galvanise the island’s ‘light workers’ to come together to create support groups and ‘sacred circles of awareness’.
“Elder people who have been here for many years – light workers, therapists, healers, we honour what you’ve been doing, so let’s co create together. It is needed for these times of change to help people to feel happy and to feel at peace. We need an opening of hearts – a re-evolving. A lot of spiritual people who work on this island are aware we need to wake up and help people move through change.
“We need to find inner peace to cope with change. The island is split politically. It’s a real gem of a place to be able to bring that unity to an individual, to a home, to children. I was shocked to hear an eight-year-old boy say the only thing he is afraid of is going across the border. The patterns keep repeating, habits, things happen in a community, in places like Jerusalem, we have to be able to look at what’s underneath. And we have to do this through individuals not the whole community at once,” urges Alicia.
Alicia hopes that her island-wide courses, embracing north and south, will plant the seeds of change for a few individuals and through them act as catalyst for unity in Cyprus. She tries to simplify it, “It’s the old idea that everyone in this room loves me, they just don’t know it yet.”
If an apocalypse or unveiling begins here too in Cyprus, it isn’t something to fear, instead “It’s time to wake up,” Alicia challenges.
