Hadjicostis’ father received phone threat two days before son’s murder

TWO days before Sigma owner Andis Hadjicostis was murdered his father received a threatening voicemail on his mobile phone, the court heard yesterday during the ongoing murder trial.

The defence lawyer representing television presenter Elena Skordelli read the message in the context of interrogating prosecution witness, police constable Charalambos Charalambou.

“What are you looking for at Mount Athos? It’s hard to fool God. He’ll punish you eventually with so much wrongdoing. Ambition has eaten you up. You’ll end up in a coffin, like everyone,” the threatening message went.

Charalambous said he had no knowledge of the message which was reported to the police two days after Hadjicostis was murdered.

It was discovered by the driver of Hadjicostis’ father who was assigned the task of listening to condolence messages.

The defence then claimed that police had information involving a Sigma stock owner who supposedly paid two strongmen, who were in the service of a businessman, to kill Hadjicostis.

Police had this information in their possession but did not investigate, the defence claimed.

Charalambous was given the prosecution’s file to go through and said he neither knew of this nor could he find a reference in the file about it.

The witness admitted that “mistakes happen” and the documents may be missing or be filed incorrectly.

The defence also raised the possibility of recalling star witness Fanos Hadjigeorgiou whose credibility as a witness had come under fire by all defence lawyers.

The prosecution replied that they would be “forcefully opposing” such a proposal.

Hadjigeorgiou has been offered immunity in exchange for testifying against the four defendants in the case and claims to have driven the getaway motorbike and of disposing the murder weapon in the buffer zone.

The defendants are television presenter Elena Skordelli and her brother Tasos Krasopoulis who are the alleged masterminds, alleged shooter Gregoris Xenofontos and alleged fixer Andreas Gregoriou.

Hadjicostis was gunned down outside his home on January 11 last year.

The trial continues today with a new witness.
