Thieves make off with gold coins

THIEVES broke into a home in Peyia and stole over €100,000 worth of gold coins and other valuables, police said yesterday.

The theft was reported by the home owner who said his property had been burgled at around 9pm on Friday.

The burglars stole a safe containing a number of gold coins worth €100,000, valuables worth €5,000 and €1,000 in cash.

In a separate incident, thieves stole jewellery worth €30,000 from a home in Limassol.

The 48-year-old owner said the burglary took place between 10pm and midnight Friday.

Police meanwhile are still trying to locate the perpetrator of a robbery that turned into murder after the victim died from injuries he sustained in the attack that took place in Limassol last Monday.

The 42-year-old Kazakh owner of an internet café was critically injured from blows to the head, delivered by the mugger who fled the scene with €3,000 in cash.

The man, who was married with a young daughter, died on Friday – the first death as a result of a mugging.

Police, who are now treating the case as premeditated murder, yesterday appealed to the public for assistance but played down reports suggesting there has been a spike in robberies.

“We want to protect society but certainly we must not fear-monger,” police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos said.

He said between January and the end of April there had been 45 robberies with over half – 57.8 per cent – solved by the authorities.

During the same period last year there were 54 robberies with just 18 being resolved.
