Leaders APOEL stunned by lowly Alki

ALKI coach Itzhak Shum was delighted with his side’s 2-1 victory over league leaders APOEL on Sunday at the Antonis Papadopoulos stadium in Larnaca.

“This is a very good night for everyone within the club because we were able to win. Not only did we take the three points but we beat APOEL who are a very big team,” he said.

“My team played some great football and although we had many players missing, we managed to win.

“When they all return to the squad we will show what we are really capable of as, in my opinion, we belong among the top six teams in this league.

Now, we must forget this game and approach the next one with exactly the same levels of seriousness,” Shum added.

Faltering Chelsea in need of a boost in Copenhagen

THE one positive from Chelsea’s FA Cup defeat by Everton on penalties is that Carlo Ancelotti’s faltering side can now focus solely on the trophy that has proved agonisingly elusive in recent years.

Not that FC Copenhagen will be concerned with that when the Danes host the Premier League champions in their atmospheric Parken Stadium tonight in the first leg of their Champions League, last 16 tie.

While there is a huge difference in experience between the two with Copenhagen in uncharted territory up against a club with five Champions League semi-finals in the last seven years, Chelsea’s current malaise suggests Ancelotti’s side could be in for a testing night in the Danish capital.

Royal Wedding Beckham’s coming but no Obama

News that Britain’s royal wedding invites are in the post has touched off lively press speculation, with former England soccer captain David Beckham and the King of Bahrain tipped to be attending but not Barack Obama or Sarah Ferguson.

Royal watchers say Beckham, who worked with William on England’s failed bid to host the World Cup in 2018, and his ex-Spice Girl wife Victoria will be among the 1,900 guests at London’s Westminster Abbey on April 29.

Other lucky recipients of invites include William’s ex-girlfriends Jecca Craig and Olivia Hunt and Middleton’s ex-boyfriend Rupert Finch, newspapers said.
