AKEL unveils MP candidates line-up

LEFT-WING AKEL, the government’s major party, yesterday introduced the 56 candidates who will contest May’s parliamentary elections. The new MPs will be elected for a five-year term.

Addressing an extraordinary party convention, AKEL Secretary General Andros Kyprianou called on party voters to “send a strong message of support and to continue their backing of the government’s struggle and the President’s progressive and popular pact”.

Kyprianou praised AKEL’s candidates, adding that “they represent the working people, the youth and the female population”.

He also referred to the Cyprus problem, underlining the government’s “firm struggle and strong will to solve the issue and reunify the country”. Kyprianou was critical of all those who cannot accept that Demetris Christofias, a former secretary general of AKEL, is now the President of the Republic. In his speech, he referred to the fiscal consolidation programme that the government has put forward, adding that “some political parties criticise the President, but I dare to say that the people are lucky because our President comes from a party of the left and does not have conservative ideas”.
