Yes, wellies are best – and more effective – when the length of them reaches just below your knee but who says they can’t be ankle length? Peacocks, of all places, has decided to take the plunge and offer wellington boots with a bit of a style change and I must say the result isn’t half as bad. The combat army inspiration is hot on the heels of the military trend that’s being fully embraced this season. Having said this, please fight the urge to team your Peacocks army ankle wellies with a khaki coat. Again stick with a denim jacket or layers of cardigans, long, short, sweet and warm.

Carpe Diem
At one of our favourite little shops in the old part of Nicosia where gorgeous fashion accessories and other goodies can be found, the Striggles hand decorated bright red and black wellies can also be found. Katerina, owner of Carpe Diem that boasts an extraordinary range of handmade accessories and one-off clothes designed by local designers, told me that the Striggles wellies have been the hottest ‘thing’ in the shop this season. Younger girls are more likely to fancy the boots that are decorated with pieces of colourful material and funky bits and pieces making them an excellent piece of fashion to own this season if you want to be bang on trend.

Hunter
There is absolutely no way we could pull together an informed and up-to-date presentation on wellington boots and not mention the King of all wellies: Hunter. They come in a multitude of colours – khaki and black being the most popular – and are made from vulcanised natural rubber and built on an orthopaedic last for the legendary Hunter fit or a synthetic fibre famed for its insulating properties, meaning that Hunter boots are what you should be looking for… if you live on a farm or in a very rainy country. Kate Moss wearing them then at muddy festivals can be explained and justified but when the whole world started copying her and Hunter boots were seen on Nicole Richie in California, you knew this was another Ugg fixation that wouldn’t go away until at least two people you know own a pair. We haven’t been able to track a representative in Cyprus but Asos.com and the Hunter website will happily deliver to your doorstep.

I spent a good two hours walking around the shops staring at the shoe shop windows that proudly stock wellies in all shapes and sizes, colours and patterns. I can’t say I was impressed by the cheap plastic overload and tacky styles but above all, I was least impressed with the leopard skin version. While I am a fan of wild style I would never, not even if my life depended on it, wear a pair of leopard print wellington boots. Anyone over the age of 18 should not be allowed to wear them and even in those young age cases, it would be OK, only if you happened to have an impeccable crazy style. But generally speaking this is a warning to stay away.

Sax
I was amazed to discover that wellies can look remarkably stylish and fabulous. But only when teamed with another material. Sax shoes has nailed the style and made it look really good by combining the lower part of the shoe, surrounding the foot – the part that actually gets wet and needs to provide insulation – with leather that goes slightly over the knee but being a flat shoe, it is hardly provocative or slutty. Gorgeous boots with a twist and a flare that will make any outfit look good; dress them up, dress them down.

Since I’ve been obsessed with dumping this boot style on the younger generation that can get away with fashion faux pas, it was about time I found a cute kiddie pair too. These adorable pink wellies are the perfect gift for a two or three year old girl who doesn’t want to be told she can’t go out and play in the rain – when it finally gets here – and loves nothing more than pink accessories teamed with flowers and an extra dose of happiness.
