Centre celebrates 20 years of culture

NICOSIA’S Centre of Cultural Heritage has just celebrated its 20th anniversary with a series of celebrations at Famagusta Gate.

The non-profit Centre, which is situated in the old town of Nicosia, at the 80-year-old House of Costas Christodoulou is mainly used as a scientific research centre. It has recently been affiliated with the University of Nicosia in areas such as archaeology, history of art and cultural heritage, partaking in projects such as the recording and study of natural heritage and especially the creation of an inventory of Cyprus’ traditional plants.

According to Dr Emilios Solomou, deputy president of the Centre, its connection with the university will allow students to be involved in its research projects.

The Centre is also involved with a number of specialised museums, mainly devoted to Byzantine and Christian religious art such as the museums in Palechori. “This is important to our cultural heritage,” said Solomou.

“Through studies conducted by the Centre we offer publications of a cultural nature, for example on Byzantine icons,” he added.

The centre has also taken part in the enlivening of the capital according to Dr. Sophocles Sophocleous, its founder.

“We played an important role for the revivification of the area from Ledra Street to Paphos Gate by restoring and rehabilitating the most important historic residence in this area, and creating a cultural and scientific organisation,” said Sophocleous.
