Tersefanou golf project set to begin

A CONSORTIUM of local developers has officially announced the construction of a long-awaited multi-million euro golf resort project.

At a press launch attended by Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Antonis Paschalides, the Med Group displayed plans for the new development which will be built in Tersefanou, on the outskirts of Larnaca.

The project is a joint-venture partnership between the DJK Group of Companies, Hassapis Land Developers and Sakyrco Construction and is expected to be completed within the next four to five years.

According to the plans, the resort will span an area of 1,500,000m² and will feature an 18-hole golf course, complimented by water features, lakes, bunkers and fairways.

The company say the course will extend over an area of 580 000m², with the total course measuring 5560 meters and will include a practice driving range.

George Hassapis, the CEO of Hassapis Land Developers told an audience of around 200 people gathered at Larnaca Municipal Theatre that Cyprus is an ideal location for golf tourism with the right climate and geography.

“About seven years ago we began to design a golf course for the area of Tersefanou. These projects will help the upgrading of our tourist product and development in general.

“Our main concern has always been to respect the environment and our cultural heritage. We therefore have followed all strict guidelines from Government departments,” he added.

Antonis Paschalides praised the project saying golf would play an important role in the future development of tourism in Cyprus.

The resort will also feature the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) National Golf Academy of Cyprus. The PGA will manage of the golf course ensuring the resort is added to their list of European destinations.

DJK Corporation Chairman Demes Karapatakis said that the PGA affiliation would mean professional championships could be staged on the island, adding that the aim is to put Cyprus on the map for professional golfers.

The company announced that a landscaping project will be undertaken next year, with over 400,000 plants and trees planted in addition to extensive infrastructure works, including green areas, footpaths and cycling tracks.

A private desalination project is scheduled for development to provide the massive quantities of water needed to maintain the course.

The Green Party has continuously criticized the development of golf courses in Cyprus, pointing to the massive consumption of water used to maintain the greens.
