Four arrested after attack on Indian man

A 35 YEAR old man of Indian descent was assaulted and beaten in Nicosia on Wednesday night by a gang of four men.

According to police, at around 10pm four men jumped out of a car on Rigenis Street and attacked the Indian man with a plastic pipe, causing minor injuries to his left hand.

The four men were spotted in the same vehicle not far from the scene by police officers who pulled them over, and after searching the car allegedly found a plastic pipe, a bat, pepper spray and a piece of wood. The young men are all from Nicosia and are between the ages of 18 and 22.

The four were arrested and spent the night at Paphos Gate Police station.  A police source at Paphos Gate police station in Nicosia said: “The men spent the night in jail. In the morning they were taken to court, charged and then released. The court case has been set for December 18.”

The crime is reminiscent of the violence that occurred last Friday where a gang of black-clad youths in Nicosia randomly attacked seven members of the public with batons and pepper spray, police at the time indicated that the attacks of last Friday could have been racially motivated.

Asked if the events could be related a police spokesman said: “Four persons have been arrested in connection to an attack on a 35-year-old man, we are still investigating to see if it is connected to the crimes of last Friday but it appears that they are not directly connected.”
