New deal on football TV viewing rights

CYTA AND PRIMETEL have agreed in principal to share their exclusive television rights to Cypriot first division football games. The deal is poised to be sealed next week after a few minor technical details have been solved.

Under the agreement PrimeTel will allow CyTA to broadcast the home games of Apollon Limassol, AEP and APOP Kinyras at no extra cost. While on their side CyTA will allow PrimeTel to broadcast the home games of ENP, AEK Larnaca and Doxa Katokopia.

The announcement comes after PrimeTel and LTV had announced last week the termination of their long standing relationship in over a dispute over viewing rights.

PrimeTel had accused LTV of creating new channels and broadcasting Cypriot games on them for the sole purpose of extracting additional fees from PrimeTel. For its part, LTV had said that PrimeTel had refused to meet their financial obligations toward the network.

After the split, PrimeTel CEO Ermes Stefanou had said: “I will be in discussion with CyTA and LTV in order to achieve integrated coverage of Cypriot football matches so that all fans can watch all the games on one platform”

After acquiring the rights of PrimeTel and still having an agreement with LTV in place Cytavision now is the only satellite platform that holds the rights to all the games in the Cypriot first division.

An announcement on the Cyta website stated “This agreement is the most important step in the unification of television broadcasts of Cypriot football.”
