Four kilometres of parkway for Limassol

PLANS to build a linear park, a park which is longer than it is wider, in Limassol have finally come to fruition with construction works due to begin next month.

The Tenders Review Board finally appointed the Vathkias River project to P.A. Cyteco and Kendris Joint Venture for €1.4 million, which was the lowest offer.

Six consortiums had shown an interest in undertaking the project with the evaluation procedure finally completed on March 12 and the tender appointed on March 26.

The project, which went through two tender procedures, is due to start in about a month and should be completed in 18 months.

The entire project will cover the municipalities of Ayios Athanasios, Mesa Gitonia and Limassol.

In the first stage construction works will include the Ajax area right up until Mesa Yitonia. The second stage of the project, south of Ajax until the beach, will be completed at a later stage.

The plan is to put four kilometres of walkway at pedestrians’ disposal which will include pavements and a bicycle lane. At various points along the route the path will widen to include children’s parks, green areas and outdoor sports areas. The linear park will also include lighting, benches, freshwater drinking taps and wooden bridges, as well as an underground pedestrian walkway for the public and students of the 27th Timiou Prodromou Primary School.

Meanwhile a second linear park is currently up for tender review. The second park will be constructed by the Garilli River. Four consortiums have shown an interest in the project with offers ranging from €8 million to €11 million. The municipality of Limassol is expected to make its decision by the middle of this month with works due to begin this summer. The project includes a large network of pavements and bicycle lanes that will cross the town starting from Ayios Antonis and ending up at the Polemidia dam. It will include green areas, children’s parks and rest stops.  Ninety per cent of the project will be EU funded.
