Two-day campaign to clean up the old town

NICOSIA Municipality will be sprucing up the old town this Saturday and Sunday, Mayor Eleni Mavrou announced yesterday.

The cleanup effort comes under the campaign banner, “Together We Clean Old Nicosia.” The municipality also plans to clean other areas of the city at different times during the year.

The municipality is asking residents of the old town to set unwanted furniture, household appliances, and other rubbish on the street so that cleaning crews may pick them up. Crews will also be moving old cars, other large rubbish, and unused building materials out of the centre, washing pavement and open residential spaces, painting over graffiti, and trimming grass and overgrown vegetation.

If residents encounter difficulty in bringing their trash downstairs they can call the municipality and crews will come to their homes and bring it down for them, the mayor said.

“I request from the residents of our city, from its workers, to place their trash and unused items out [on the street] at the specified times, a little while before the collection, so that we can create a Nicosia we can be proud of,” Mavrou said.

Municipality employees will be joined by contract workers and volunteers to collect and remove trash and sweep and clean pavements. Mavrou exhorted anyone who would like to volunteer for the cleanup effort to call and inform the municipality.

“With small efforts by everyone we can change the image of the city,” said Mavrou. “The message we want to send is that this benefits all of us.”

“The major objective of these two days of the campaign is to clean the area inside the Nicosia walls,” continued Mavrou, “but also, with the cooperation of its residents and workers,” to keep it clean.”
