Christofias informs leaders on Cyprob developments

PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS flew to Greece yesterday where was due to meet President Papoulias and Prime Minister George Papandreou to discuss the latest developments on the Cyprus Problem.

Christofias has also sent letters to the five permanent members of the UN Security Council in addition to the EU analysing the reasons why the latest proposals of the Turkish side in the negotiations are unacceptable.

The meeting with Papoulias took place last night shortly after Christofias’ arrival in Greece. Today he is scheduled to fly to the Peloponnese to attend the official opening ceremony of the newly-completed housing development of Artemida with Papandreou. The Artemida estate was completely rebuilt at the expense of the Cypriot government after the village was destroyed in the 2007 Greek forest fires.

Tomorrow Christofias is set to hold discussions with Papandreou and the Speaker of the Greek Parliament, Philippos Petsalnikos. He will also be holding meetings with the leaders and representatives of the major Greek political parties.

According to government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou, in his letter to the permanent members of the UN Security Council, Christofias analysed why the proposals of the Turkish side are outside the agreed-upon basis of the talks and also out of accord with the UN resolutions on the matter and the ethics and principles of the EU.

In the letter, Christofias also outlined the strategic positions of the Greek Cypriot side and reaffirmed the Greek Cypriot commitment to work for a solution to the Cyprus problem.
