THE FAMILY of Tassos Papadopoulos yesterday denied reports that they had enlisted celebrity psychic, Uri Geller, in their hunt for the late President’s remains.
Nicholas Papadopoulos said “I have not read the reports, but I have been told about them and they are not true. They have no basis in reality.”
Geller, who was in Kefalonia yesterday, declined to comment.
However, on Friday Geller told Sigma TV that he would happily help with the investigation into the theft of the body if he was asked to do so. He has in the past worked for the CIA and the FBI on criminal cases.
According to Politis newspaper, members of the Papadopoulos contacted Geller last week. Allegedly, they asked for the police to pass photographs of graveside and surrounding area to be passed to the psychic, after he requested them to help him activate his metaphysical skills and unravel the case.
Papadopoulos’ body was stolen from the Deftera cemetery in the early hours of December 11, a day before the first anniversary of his death.
Police spokesman Michalis Katsounotos yesterday denied that they were using Geller’s paranormal talents to locate the body.
Asked if they had enlisted the help of psychics to solve crimes, Katsounotos said “We use everything we can, but not psychics.”
The confirmed link between Geller and the family has been a long-term friend of both Geller and the family is Polakis Sarris, who was a close aide to the late president.
Sarris confirmed that he had met with the psychic after being seen together in public. However, he added that he did not discuss or know anything about the case of the remains.
The identity of family members who requested Geller’s help was not disclosed in the Politis report and Papadopoulos yesterday denied any knowledge of family members’ attempts to enlist Geller to find the former President’s remains.
Famous for his cutlery bending proclivity, Geller has been in Cyprus this week to promote a lithographic exhibition “Symbols Folio” which is currently on display at The Four Seasons in Limassol.
According to his website, he first noticed his magical abilities aged of five. After a mysterious encounter with a sphere of light in his garden, he developed the ability to curl up and break spoons without applying force. His mother attributes the abilities to an inheritance from his relative, Sigmund Freud. He lived in Cyprus from the age of 11 to 17.
Those sceptical of his detective skills may be surprised to learn that he has previously worked for the FBI and the CIA. As his website says “His work with the FBI and the CIA has ranged from using mind power to erase KGB computer files and track serial killers, to attending nuclear disarmament negotiations to bombard and influence the Russian chief negotiator with positive thought waves so that the Soviet delegation would sign the Nuclear Arms Reduction Treaty.”
