DION Harris scored 20 points and Balsa Radunovic had a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds as Frederick Achilleas Kaimakliou beat Intercollege/ETHA 82-68 in the final game of the national basketball championship Round 10 on Sunday evening at the Lefkotheo Indoor Arena.
The hosts imposed themselves from as early off as the tip-off and they were leading 17-14 at the end of the opening period, increasing their advantage to five points at 41-36 as the teams headed to the locker rooms at the half time break.
As the teams were leaving the floor a huge brawl broke out mainly between the officials of the two clubs, and also including some of the players. The resolution was the expulsion of a leading official from each side and Frederick Achilleas Kaimakliou’s team captain Giorgos Georgiou. However, as they were leaving the court Intercollege/ETHA’s youngster Nicolas Konstantinou lost his temper and tried to reach the hosts’ official and the player in the corridor which lead to the locker rooms, forcing the referees to expel him as well.
Nicolas Papadopoulos’ men then used a punishing third period to put the game beyond any doubt as they outscored their opponents 25-12 to enter the final period leading by 18 at 66-48. The Engomi team tried to climb back in the game in the last quarter but they had no strength to do so and the hosts unexpectedly won with an ease taking in consideration all the problems club had to face over the Christmas holidays period.
Adam Waleskowski had 17 points and nine rebounds for Frederick Achilleas Kaimakliou, while Chris Garner added 16 and a team-high five assists.
Alexander Wesby led Intercollege/ETHA with 19 points, while Aleksandar Matic and Anthony King had 12 and 10 points respectively.
After this win the Kaimakliou team improved to a 4-5 record, while Intercollege/ETHA drop to 5-4.
In other games of the round the ruling champions Madisons APOEL topped Keravnos Strovolos 87-85 after an overtime to keep their record perfect at 9-0, while BMC AEK defeated Ydra Asphalistiki ENAD 76-71 at the Kition Athletic Center in Larnaca. Pizza Express Apollon had no difficulties against Nissan Omonoia winning 86-65 at the Tassos Papadopoulos Athletic Center in Nicosia.
