AS ONE of the six ‘victims’ of terrorism in our Larnaca apartment block, I congratulate Charles Charalambous on his excellent portrayal of the problems that we have suffered over the past five years on account of one selfish female criminal.
In addition to the problems mentioned in his article ‘Apartment block terrorised by law-breaking female resident’ (Cyprus Mail, December 16), I would like to mention the following: Mrs X has twice physically attacked the buildings committee secretary, once with blows to the face and head with a spatula, and then again three weeks later with a large ceramic tile. She was convicted of assault and fined.
Mrs X is facing prosecution for never paying one cent towards the building common charges in the seven years that she has lived here. At one time she owned six noisy dogs and is currently facing court proceedings for owning four in contravention to the Dog Act of 2002.
She even invented false charges against the secretary, saying she had seen him trying to poison her dogs. Despite the police admitting that she had asked a veterinary doctor to invent a report that one of her illegal dogs had been poisoned, a Senior Police Officer in Nicosia still insisted that charges be brought.
Mrs X used to live in Nicosia. After many court appearances, the secretary was acquitted as he was on four other false charges brought against him by Mrs X which resulted in no less than a further 43 visits to the Larnaca Courts! The dog was not poisoned at all, but had a common case of gastro-enteritis, and lived. Why did the police not have her charged with falsifying evidence?
Our secretary has also been subject to other reprisals for his efforts to try and maintain our building as a decent place to live. His flat entrance door has been smashed open and his almost new sports motorbike was stolen. Following this theft, he received a text threat saying that next time he would disappear. In desperation, the residents employed a management company in the hope that they would be able to control Mrs X, but they have failed to do so.
Mrs X unfortunately typifies a small percentage of Cypriots who believe that they can behave in a totally antisocial manner and thumb their noses at the rules of a decent society. It is a sad reflection on Cyprus that many of the countries bureaucrats are too easily persuaded to ignore the laws of the Republic and thus encourage the Mrs Xs of this world to inflict misery on decent law abiding citizens who have not only invested in this country, but whose taxes pay the salaries of a bloated, nepotistic, and ineffective local government.
