A new Limassol being planned

PUBLIC WORKS projects planned for Limassol over the next three years will give the city a brand new face, said Limassol Mayor Andreas Christou yesterday in his round-up of the municipality’s achievements for 2009.
A long list of infrastructure projects have been lined up, many of which are set to commence in 2010.  “With a spirit of mutual acquiescence and understanding, with common responsibility, Mayor and Executive Council worked systematically with the only criterion being the good of the town and the municipality’s citizens,” said Christou in describing the efforts and projects which the Limassol Municipality have made this year.
Four main infrastructure projects together amount to approximately €50.1million are in the pipeline.  These are the complete renovation of the Pattichio municipal theatre, the renovation of the centre of town  – work on which is expected to start in February 2010 – and the development of two new parks.
The ongoing renovation of the old harbour will continue while, over the course of 2010, work will begin on the much-anticipated Limassol Marina project.  Christou added that the traffic survey for the conference centre to be located in the proposed Marina complex will soon be completed.
In terms of the promotion of sports and athletic activities, two new soccer pitches are being planned, with their combined total cost adding up to €900 000, which is being paid by KOA the Cyprus Athletic Association.  One is to be located west of Georgiou Averoff Street and the other in the old Turkish neighbourhood.
Already completed in 2009 was the Fitideio Atheltic Centre, as also were the redevelopment and improvement works on Enaeriou beach.  CyTA has agreed to pay for the bridge over the coastal road to connect the Fitideio athletic centre with the Olympion beach.
The Cultural Centre Panos Solomonides was also completed over the course of 2009, as was the Theatrical Museum.  Works are set to begin soon on the necessary installations for permanent exhibitions by theatrical companies of the national and municipal theatre societies.
