Local workshops discuss climate change

FOUR BICOMMUNAL workshops focusing on the implications of climate change for Cyprus are being organised in light of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen on December 7.

The Biodiversity and Conservation Working Group of the Cyprus Environmental Stakeholder Forum (CESF) is organising the workshops so that environmental experts, in co-operation with youth organisations, can draft common statements on environmental issues for Cyprus.

They will hand their conclusions to President Demetris Christofias, Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat and the technical committee on environmental issues established by the leaders.

The aim of the workshop is to raise awareness about the implications of climate change for Cyprus and to stress that environmental issues need to be tackled on an island-wide basis.

The workshops are sponsored by the US Embassy in Cyprus and their outcomes will be presented at the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

They will take place at the Fulbright Centre in Nicosia from 6pm to 8pm on the following dates:

November 11 – Implications of Desertification for Cyprus;

November 30 – The Future of Wetland and Waterbird Conservation in Cyprus;

December 2 – Vulnerability of Coastal Habitats; and,

December 16 – Water Management: An Issue of Serious Concern for Cyprus.
