A GROUP of local cancer charities has joined forces with a professional team to create a Hollywood-inspired 2010 calendar, using recovering patients as models. The aim of the endeavour is to promote a positive image of people with cancer.
“The idea came about when my wife was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, from which she now is making a full recovery,” Kevin Jones, photographer and project organiser told the Cyprus Mail.
“I wanted to give something back for all the great help we have received from the doctors and medical team here in Cyprus.”
“[My wife’s experience] opened my eyes to see how prevalent this disease is, touching nearly all families. So apart from raising funds for the charities, equally important was to give encouragement to other sufferers by showing what fellow ex-patients are doing with their lives,” Jones added.
The 2010 calendar recreates images from iconic movies, featuring the original scene on the bottom of each month’s page and the recreation on the top. Featured films include Bonnie & Clyde, Kill Bill and Cabaret. All the models featured in the calendar are people who are suffering from cancer or have completed cancer treatment.
Models got to select the film and the scene that best represents their personality and re-enacted the image with the help of a professional team that included a wardrobe department, make-up artists, a hairstylist, art director and photographer, all of whom donated their time and skills for free.
The calendar’s printing and production costs were covered by main sponsor of the project, Gan Direct.
“Gan Direct is proud to be among those who have contributed towards the production of a 2010 calendar to raise funds for the cancer charities in Cyprus.
“The aim of the calendar is to promote a positive image to cancer sufferers, to demonstrate that life goes on, and being diagnosed with cancer is not always the end of the world,” said Evi Stavrou, Marketing and Quality Manager, Gan Direct.
Participating charities include PACYCAF, the Anti Cancer Society, Friends For Life, Paphos Hospice and Friends of the Paphos Hospice. All proceeds from the sale of the calendars will go to these charities.
- The calendars cost €10 each and are available from Orphanides stores, the participating charities and Gan Direct. For more information and to make an order contact [email protected].
