New Larnaca airport opens

THE NEW €656.3 million Larnaca International Airport is open for business after being inaugurated by President Demetris Christofias yesterday. Operations will officially begin on Tuesday.

The nasty, hidden costs of extra leg-room

A sign at Monarch airlines check-in desk said: ‘Extra leg-room €31’. I decided I needed extra room and paid the money.
When everyone was seated on the plane, I struck up a conversation with the couple next to me. They, it seemed, were given the ‘extra leg-room’ free of charge – presumably to fill the seats.

What about the Indians, Your Excellency?

It’s nice to see that when visiting Cyprus, the Indian president always has a lovely bust to lay a wreath at and a picturesque street to remind her of the wonderful relations between the two countries.

A name to please everyone?

About the problem of the renaming – or not – of Athalassa Avenue referred to in the Coffeeshop (Sunday Mail, November 1).
Would a possible solution be to name the first 75% as Papadopolous Avenue then the remainder could be Annan Avenue, which would sum it up for future historical reference?

Concerned,
Larnaca

Diary: The beautiful game loses its shine

Half way through the footy season this week and I’m not missing it one bit. I decided to take a year off from following football – or “fubble” as the petulant and often incomprehensible Sir Alex Ferguson calls it. It’s been a bit like fasting for Lent – but an awful lot easier. Plus it’s freed up time for all those little jobs I’ve been putting off – like tidying my sock drawer.

Look at me, I’m single

Ever complained about how hard it is to meet someone in Cyprus? One couple now organise singles events to get people together. ZOE CHRISTODOULIDES gets dressed up and goes along to an evening

Restaurant review: Sakura, Paphos

People who constantly complain ‘it’s nothing like the real thing’ when eating out in ethnic restaurants generally make me want to reach for my cattle prod. Okay, some establishments, particularly in the Paphos area, should probably be arrested for crimes against food but there are a few resident owners who genuinely try to stick as close as they can to the core philosophy of ‘foreign food’. One of these has to be owners of the Enotis group of companies, which has opened and run Chloe’s Chinese restaurants, Oliveto, One Fine Dining and Testa Rossa along with the elegant Cava La Vino plus a second cava called Wines and More over the last decade. The newest addition to their stable is Sakura, a well-appointed Japanese restaurant opposite the Annabelle Hotel.

Drink: Beer with food

There is more to consider than just wine when deciding on what to drink with a meal
